What Is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one of the most effective, evidence-based approaches in therapy today. It was originally developed for people with intense emotional experiences, but the skills it teaches are genuinely useful for anyone who wants to regulate their emotions more effectively, communicate better in relationships, set boundaries and tolerate difficult moments without making things worse.
DBT teaches you things that should have been taught but weren't. How to feel your feelings without being controlled by them. How to ask for what you need without shutting down or exploding. How to sit with discomfort without reaching for something that makes it worse in the long run.
DBT is one of my favorite things to teach and here's why
I've been using DBT with clients for years and I've watched it change people's lives in concrete, measurable ways. It's not abstract. It's not vague. It's a specific set of skills, mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, that you can actually use in your real life, in real time.
And unlike some therapeutic approaches that feel more like talking about your problems, DBT gives you tools to do something about them. Clients leave sessions with something to actually use. That's what I love about it.
How I Use DBT
I integrate DBT skills into individual therapy in a way that's tailored to you, not a one-size-fits-all curriculum, but the specific skills most relevant to your specific struggles. We practice them in session, we apply them to your actual life, and we troubleshoot what gets in the way of using them.
DBT May Be Right for You If:
-
Your emotions feel more intense than other people's
-
You struggle to set limits with people in your life
-
You react in ways you later regret
-
You use food, alcohol, or other behaviors to cope with distress
-
Your relationships are intense, chaotic, or unstable
-
You're hard on yourself and struggle to let things go
-
You want practical skills, not just insight
